The most practical way to measure sludge thickness is to know the base of the sludge from previous survey and to then repeat survey getting a reflection off the top of the sludge and subtracting one dataset from the other. Of course, this is not possible if the base of sludge dataset has been lost or never collected or datums have been lost.
